Blantyre Christmas Event Cancelled

We hear tonight that Blantyre Community Committee have announced that the Blantyre Christmas Lights Switch on Event for 2020 has been cancelled.

The Committee’s 9th Annual Blantyre Christmas Event was due to take place the last Sunday in November, but due to the current ongoing pandemic and restrictions on mass gatherings, and time needed to organise, the event is now cancelled.

South Lanarkshire Council are one of the first Council’s in Scotland to make a decision to cancel all outdoor Christmas events, Blantyre’s included.

A spokesperson for the Committee told us, “We’re sure you’ll all understand despite being disappointed. It’s a real highlight for us to put on these free events for families each year. “

Executive director of community and enterprise, Michael McGlynn, has said the council is “still determined to spread a bit of festive cheer” so the traditional trees and lights erected by the council in Cambuslang, Carluke, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Lanark and Rutherglen will be displayed as normal.

It is also understood that the community-run lights and decorations in 14 other towns and villages will also still be put up this year. We have already written asking for clarity regarding Blantyre and will advise in due course.

The council’s lighting unit normally support the 14 community-run events but they have asked that the usual celebrations around the lights being switched on don’t take place.

Instead this year, the Council are still looking into a number of ways of highlighting that the lights are switched-on, and they will communicate this with the relevant Community Groups once they have more details.

The Committee added, “Please be assured, we’re still here and will be making sure our Summer Gala, 80’s Party/Dance through the Decades and Christmas Events in 2021 are the BEST they’ll ever be! We could all do with a party about now…..”

  1. Sorry but I don’t understand the details stated, why is Blantyre excluded?

    1. Im not sure Helen but worried about this as there are significantly less resources being utilised in the council just now as they look for cuts. The major towns appear to be getting lights. I’ve asked them to clarify.
