Scotland’s rules on wearing face coverings change today, Friday 09 October with tighter new measures introduced in the fight to control infections of coronavirus.
From today, we’re now expected to wear face-masks in places where previously we didn’t need to. The face covering regulations apply to everyone, with the exception of under fives and those with exemptions, for example legitimate disability or health reasons. Police can issue £60 fines to anyone caught ignoring the law.
It can be confusing when things change so often, so for clarity, here’s a latest list of places you must wear a face covering in Scotland – unless of course you’re exempt.
Pubs, restaurants, cafes, hotels
Face coverings must be worn in all common areas, for example walking from the door to your table or to the loo. You can take it off once you are seated.
Takeaways
It is necessary to wear one at all times inside a takeaway. It can’t be removed until you leave.
Public transport
It’s against the law not to cover up on trains, buses, Glasgow subway, taxis, private hire cabs, ferries and planes.
Shops
All shops, malls and retail premises, including hairdressers, beauticians, chemists, banks and even estate agents require customers to wear face coverings.
Visitor and leisure attractions
Indoor zoos, aquariums, museums are among a host of places anyone over five is required to wear a face covering.
Care homes and hospitals
Visitors should cover their faces when visiting care homes and hospitals, attending hospital as an outpatient or entering a GP surgery.
Workplaces
Anyone who can’t work from home must wear a covering in common areas, eg, canteens, break rooms and corridors. Anyone working in hospitality must use a face covering throughout their shift.
Schools
Over 12s should wear face coverings in corridors, school buses and other common areas. Pupils are not generally required to do so during lessons.
