The end of simply turning up to the tip to dispose of your household rubbish is almost here.

A reminder, all vehicles visiting a Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) in South Lanarkshire will need to book their visit in advance from Monday 12 August 2024. This includes the recycling centre serving Hamilton and Blantyre at Priestfield, High Blantyre.

For those wishing to use the tip, it means telephoning in advance or going online via a website link to book a slot…each time your visit.

How to book a visit

Bookings will open from Monday 5th August for the week beginning Monday 12th August. Visits can be booked online. Scan the QR code to book your slot online or confirm your recycling booking slot at http://www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/book-a-slot or by phone on 0303 123 1020.

From Monday 9 September 2024 there will be no access without a prior booking.

Disposal of waste is fast becoming an expensive business. This comes after South Lanarkshire recently ended free kerbside uplifts and introduced a  a £40 charge for all standard bulk uplift requests and Non-standard uplifts, for example, large-scale DIY projects such as renovation materials, kitchens and bathrooms, incurring a charge from £79.54. Let’s not forget it also now costs £45 to dispose of garden waste.

Blantyre Telegraph has also learned that further restrictions may be imposed at recycling centres in the council’s next round of cuts, though we have requested more information on such plans.

Have your say. Is this welcome news? Will these new policies work or drive different behaviours?
