VE Day 80th Anniversary

Today, on Thursday 8th May 2025, is the final day of the 4 day VE Day 80th Anniversary celebrations.

Like many other places, we are encouraging the lighting of Beacons and Lamp Lights of Peace at 9.30pm, something we can all do in our own way.

If public events are more your thing, North Lanarkshire Council will be hosting a flag-raising, beacon lighting at Strathclyde Park at 9:30pm), and special events at Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life and North Lanarkshire Heritage in Motherwell.

The event commemorates the end of the Second World War in Europe. A series of nationwide events are set to honour the service and sacrifice of those who fought and endured during the war.

Veterans, dignitaries and members of the public will gather at key locations including London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff for parades, memorial services, and flypasts. The Cenotaph in Whitehall will be the focal point of the national remembrance, with a special service attended by members of the Royal Family.
