Connecting Covey Celebration

On Thursday, 19th June, COVEY (Community Volunteers Enabling You) welcomed more than 60 guests to its Connecting COVEY celebration – a vibrant evening recognising the people and partnerships that make its work with children, young people, and families across Lanarkshire possible.

Celebrating Community and Impact

Attendees included representatives from key funders such as The Scottish Government and STV Children’s Appeal, dedicated volunteers, trustees, staff, generous donors, and former COVEY volunteer, Monica Lennon MSP.

The evening was designed to strengthen connections within the COVEY community, share the organisation’s exciting new strategic direction, and spotlight the voices of those whose lives have been transformed through its work.

Inspiring Voices Take the Stage

The programme featured eight powerful speakers. Monica Lennon MSP commended COVEY for its “transformative support” and ongoing commitment to young people and families across the region.

Guests also heard from COVEY Young Ambassadors, Udston Primary School’s Head Teacher Michelle Parker, and inspiring former participants now giving back as volunteers – each highlighting the far-reaching impact of COVEY’s support.

“I’ll never forget how gently my Befriender stood by me, offering space, patience, and kindness, even when I wasn’t ready to talk. In the midst of change and uncertainty, they brought stability, compassion, and a deep sense of being valued.” (Emma, Young Ambassador)

A standout moment came from Young Ambassador Emma Naylor, who delivered a heartfelt musical performance inspired by her personal journey with COVEY. Her performance earned a standing ovation and left a lasting impression on everyone present.

Celebrating a Milestone in Volunteering Excellence

A major highlight of the evening was COVEY’s recent achievement of the prestigious Investing in Volunteers Award – the UK quality standard that recognises excellence in volunteer management. This award reflects COVEY’s deep commitment to supporting, valuing, and developing its volunteers, who are central to the organisation’s success.

The award was presented by VASLan CEO Jimmy Wilson and accepted on behalf of all COVEY volunteers by David Kelly, the organisation’s longest-serving volunteer, who has supported COVEY’s mission for an incredible 21 years. David’s dedication and service were warmly celebrated by all in attendance, a powerful reminder of the long-term commitment and compassion that underpin COVEY’s work.

Looking Ahead: COVEY’s Strategy for the Future

COVEY’s Chief Executive Officer, Lee Johnstone, reflected on the success of the evening:

“This was more than a celebration – it was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together with purpose and heart. Inspired by the powerful stories we’ve heard, we are focused on helping even more children and families feel valued, supported, and connected through our befriending, mentoring, and family-support services, ensuring no one has to face their challenges alone.”
