Skywatchers across Scotland may have a chance of spotting the Aurora Borealis tonight, Friday 28th August, as increased solar activity reaches Earth.
The Met Office says the auroral oval is expected to become enhanced later tonight and into Saturday, with possible sightings even from southern Scotland if conditions develop as forecast.
A combination of fast solar winds and material from recent Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) could trigger G1 to G2 geomagnetic storm conditions, potentially pushing the Northern Lights much further south than normal.
🌠Where to look: Face north from somewhere dark, ideally away from street lights. Northern Scotland will generally have the best chance, but central and southern Scotland shouldn’t rule it out.
📱 Top tip: Even if you can’t see much with your eyes, point your phone north and try Night Mode. Cameras can often pick up green, pink or purple colours before they’re obvious to the naked eye.
Cloud cover will be the biggest obstacle, although clearer spells are expected across parts of Scotland overnight.
Aurora forecasts can change very quickly, so keep an eye on the skies once darkness falls!
