Temporary Railway Closure

Network Rail has announced that the railway line connecting East Kilbride and Glasgow will be closed for four months, starting at the end of January, as part of a £140 million electrification project.

This initiative, funded by the Scottish government and carried out by Network Rail, aims to reduce rail emissions and improve service reliability for passengers.

The project includes building new stations at East Kilbride and Hairmyres, with Hairmyres station set to feature two platforms and an accessible footbridge, as shown in artist renderings. Additional upgrades include new footbridges at Busby and Giffnock stations, while Clarkston will receive a new station entrance.

No trains will operate between East Kilbride and Thornliebank stations from January 25 to May 18 while crews work on the track, bridges, and overhead line systems.

This work will involve installing 22km of overhead power lines and extending the double-track section between East Kilbride and Hairmyres. In areas around Busby, Clarkston, and Giffnock, the existing track will be lowered to make room for the new overhead lines beneath certain bridges.

Have your say. Does this affect you? Looking forward to this or inconvenient?

The entire project is expected to be completed by December 2025. #NetworkRail#Hairmyres#railway#EastKilbride
