David Livingstone Centre launches a new style of museum tour

On March 6th the David Livingstone Centre at Station Road, Blantyre will trial a new monthly tour costing just £5 per person, each tour aimed at delving deeper into one particular aspect of the Museum.

These tours will have a maximum capacity of 15 and will run for an hour.

The volunteers at the David Livingstone Centre are a wealth of knowledge and information, and each has their own interests and specialist areas of the museum. This new tour aims to hand the reigns over to them and capitalise on their expertise to allow them to dive deeper, and into more detail than the average guided tour would allow. With the average guided tour running for an hour and covering the whole of the museum, there is never enough time for the guides to truly explore the extent of the museum and discuss every item or anecdote.

Each month, one of the volunteers will host their own tour, devised entirely by themselves on the part of the museum they are most passionate about, for a group of up to 15 visitors. These tours aim to be more casual and conversational than the guided tour, breaking down the traditional barrier between visitor and tour guide resulting in a more personal and involved experience for the visitor.

The first of these tours will focus on the history of the Blantyre Cotton Works and David’s early life working in the mill. Tickets are now available on the David Livingstone Centre website.
