South Lanarkshire Council have announced this week, that this year Council tax will rise by 6.5%. The whopping rise, well above the rate of inflation has been set locally, rather than by the Scottish Government.
As Council’s all over Scotland take the opportunity to impose hefty rises, South Lanarkshire rise is larger than Glasgows and Edinburghs. However, Council tax in North Lanarkshire is set to rise by 7%.
Concerned residents have messaged us this week. One woman who lives in Hamilton told us, “Its just shocking! I dont know what I’m getting currently for the payments i make, neve mind another 6.5%!”
Another person in Blantyre added, “This needs highlighted. It’s unsustainable. The whole council tax model needs revisited , starting with the wages of senior staff. My council tax is now more than my mortgage payment.”
Last year saw the biggest council tax increases in 20 years across Scotland.
