Councils are setting Council Tax Rates

South Lanarkshire Council is setting its council tax rate for 2026 / 2027.

South Lanarkshire Council previously approved a 6% increase in Council Tax for last year 2025/2026 financial year, effective from April 1, 2025. Despite this, it remained one of the lowest in Scotland. The rise for example brought Band D rate to £1,378, with the budget aiming to protect essential services and fund investment, according to South Lanarkshire.

Residents, however saw further costs, such as the £45 garden waste fee, (which lets face is really council tax!) which was increased in 2025, brought in for payment by other means.

This years rate is about to be set. Have your say. Should Council tax be going up again after such a rise last year? Will it be held?

  1. South Lanarkshire recently conducted a survey on what services to cut or reduce. The options were very limited and hit the lowest paid hardest like cleaners, groundsmen. There were no options to reduce head office positions by using more efficient practices such as AI or automation. This feels elitist at best. Central overheads must be reduced
