New Cross Shopping Centre Carpark Closure

The New Cross Shopping Centre car park in Hamilton will permanently close at midnight on May 31, 2026. The shopping centre has been closed since late April as part of the Hamilton Town Centre Masterplan, with plans for future development underway. Alternative parking options are available in the area.

New SLC Leader & Officials Elected

South Lanarkshire Council has elected Maureen Devlin as its new Leader, succeeding Joe Fagan, who resigned after his election to the Scottish Parliament. Key changes also include Bert Thomson appointed as Interim Provost and Celine Handibode as Interim Depute Provost. Mo Razzaq will chair the Finance and Corporate Resource Committee.

Berkley Drive Footpath Works

South Lanarkshire Council is conducting footpath resurfacing in Coatshill, Blantyre, starting on Berkley Drive on May 11, 2026. The project will focus on the even-numbered side of the street and is anticipated to last around nine days, with access available for residents throughout the work.

Bin Collections Update

South Lanarkshire Council has reported unexpected delays in refuse collections across Hamilton, Cambuslang, Rutherglen, and East Kilbride, resulting in bins running up to a day late. Residents are advised to leave their bins at the kerbside for collection as crews work to catch up.

Free School Transport

If your child is beginning primary or secondary school in August 2026, you may qualify for free school transport from South Lanarkshire Council. Eligible primary pupils living over one mile from their school can apply for transport until the end of May. Each child’s application must be submitted separately.
