This week marks Baby Loss Awareness Week (9–15 October), a time for reflection, remembrance and showing support to families who have experienced the heartbreak of losing a baby during pregnancy, at birth or shortly afterwards.
Every baby lost leaves behind a family whose love and memories will last forever. In Scotland alone, 108 babies died within their first four weeks of life in 2024, while the stillbirth rate was 3.5 per 1,000 births.
🕯️ Wave of Light – Thursday 15 October at 7pm
This Thursday evening, families across the world are invited to light a candle at 7pm and leave it burning for one hour, creating a beautiful global Wave of Light in memory of babies who are no longer with us.
To encourage local participation, Councillor Mo Razzaq is kindly providing free tealight candles for anyone wishing to take part. These can be collected from:
📍 TACT Hall, Blantyre
📍 Mo’s @ Blantyre Premier, 190 Main Street, High Blantyre
Everyone is welcome to participate, whether personally affected by baby loss or simply wishing to show compassion and solidarity.
💗 A permanent place of remembrance
Councillor Razzaq has also suggested exploring the possibility of a permanent memorial space in Blantyre, offering grieving families somewhere peaceful to remember their little ones. He welcomes the community’s thoughts on this sensitive proposal.
🤍 You’re not alone
For anyone affected by baby loss, confidential support and understanding are available through:
• Sands: 0808 164 3332 – sands.org.uk
• SiMBA: simbacharity.org.uk
• Petals: petalscharity.org
This Thursday, even the smallest candle can carry a powerful message of love and remembrance. Please consider lighting a candle at 7pm and sharing a photograph using #WaveOfLight.
Our thoughts are with every family carrying the memory of a precious little life. ❤️
