Our consultation report on Blantyre Parking issues is now available!
A whopping 382 Blantyre people took time to share their opinions, concerns and suggestions by completing the survey form, a great sample size, so thanks very much for that.
The consultation exercise which ran on our website for the last 3 weeks pre-empted the imminent official traffic surveys by South Lanarkshire Council and sought to provide advance warning on areas of concern.
The conclusions were very interesting, with some headlines as follows:
- People generally think existing Parking in Blantyre is “very poor“. An Average score of only 3 out of 10 is returned with much room for improvement.
- On the upside, most participants at 91%, an overwhelming majority thought Blantyre drivers are currently parking with consideration and respect.
- There is an overwhelming majority concern about Station Road. Indeed Station Road represented 41% of all concerns about parking in Blantyre, followed by significant concern about Glasgow Rd, Park Lane and Main Street. Other streets were also identified to a lesser extent including issues at Camelon Crescent and Fernslea Avenue. Of note, many of these concerns are from people who live outwith these streets but within Blantyre.
- Within Appendix A listing concerns, comments about inadequate carparks, lack of parking at the train station, missing parking lines and inadequate school drop off space feature often. It was often clearly an emotive subject with all points raised included for consideration by authorities.
- Suggested themes for improvement in Appendix B include 2 pages of creative and worthwhile ideas, for example creating further carparks, enforcing current restrictions better, further signage and markings, park and ride for station, meters and better consideration of through traffic to schools in built up streets.
Our report has already been distributed to local Councillors and South Lanarkshire Council to assist their discussions and meetings. The report may also be freely used by action groups and stakeholders.
