5% Tourist Tax in Edinburgh

Councillors have voted to implement a new tourist tax for Edinburgh visitors aimed at generating £50 million annually.

The tax, thought to be the first of its kind in Scotland, is similar to those in countries such as Germany, France, Spain, and Italy, which applies to hotels, bed and breakfasts, self-catering accommodations, and properties rented through platforms like Airbnb.

The City of Edinburgh Council announced that the 5% levy will come into effect on 24 July 2026, with the funds dedicated to Edinburgh infrastructure improvements.

It remains to be seen what this will do for tourism and whether it deters visitors.
