Rare Blue Moon to light up sky tonight

Keep your eyes on the sky tonight, Sunday 31st May 2026, as a rare “Blue Moon” makes an appearance above Scotland and across the UK.

Despite its name, the Moon won’t actually appear blue. A Blue Moon is the name given to the second full moon occurring within the same calendar month — something that only happens every couple of years. May already brought us a full moon on 1st May, making tonight’s lunar display a genuine Blue Moon. 🌙

This year’s event is even more unusual as it is also a “micromoon”, meaning the Moon is near its furthest point from Earth and may appear slightly smaller and dimmer than a typical full moon.

🔭 HOW TO SEE IT:
• Look towards the eastern horizon shortly after sunset tonight.
• Find a location away from bright street lights if possible.
• Open countryside, hills and beaches will offer the best views.
• Binoculars can enhance the detail, but the Moon will be clearly visible with the naked eye.

The full Moon reaches peak illumination today, but the best views are expected this evening as it rises into the darkening sky. The next calendar Blue Moon won’t arrive until December 2028, making tonight a special opportunity for skywatchers and photographers alike.
