The two Lanarkshire councils are set to significantly benefit from a much-needed funding boost. Under the Local Government Settlement, North Lanarkshire Council will receive £869.7 million, while South Lanarkshire Council will be allocated £805.8 million.
Both councils will now face increased scrutiny to ensure the effective management of these funds, as the responsibility for spending lies entirely with them.
Additional funding will also support the development of the full business case for the replacement of University Hospital Monklands.
As part of the £2 billion Learning Estate Investment Programme, the Scottish Government will also provide substantial backing for extensions to Chryston High School and Newton Farm Primary School, addressing the needs of growing nearby communities.
Finance Secretary Shona Robison stated: “This ambitious Budget delivers funding for communities the length and breadth of Scotland – delivering the services required to meet the changing needs of a modern nation.”
It is hoped that councils will consider public feedback and listen to current consultations to use this funding to reverse some of the unpopular and damaging decisions in recent months, particularly those affecting public services, transport, community halls, and libraries.
