It’s been a recognisable brand since the 1980s, but High street fashion chain River Island has announced plans to close 33 UK stores, threatening hundreds of jobs.
The retailer, which currently operates 230 stores and employs around 5,500 staff, blamed the closures on rising operational costs and a growing shift to online shopping. Its unknown at this time which stores will close.
Despite being a long-established, family-run business, the company has faced mounting financial losses, prompting a major restructure to stay afloat.
