Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the local girl, who sadly passed away last week following a School Sports day in East Kilbride.
It is understood the eight year old died after falling from her wheel chair during a school sports race at Greenburn School.
She was promptly taken to hospital and later discharged but was re-admitted after taking unwell. The schoolgirl then passed away in hospital. Police Scotland are currently treating the pupil’s death as unexplained. South Lanarkshire Council have confirmed support for pupils and teachers is being provided at the school. Her passing has left the school and whole community deeply shocked.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 11.45am on Saturday, 16 May, 2026, we received a report an eight-year-old girl had taken unwell at a property in East Kilbride. Emergency services attended and the child was taken to hospital where she died. The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.”
