We were saddened to learn about the passing last night of local Councillor Hugh Dunsmuir.
People will know Hugh had been a Councillor for a long time and worked tirelessly over the years to improve all aspects of life in Blantyre. Born in 1944, a Labour man at heart, he was involved in many projects in the town.
A former member of Blantyre Community Council, he greatly assisted them in petitioning Blantyre folk to bring Asda to Blantyre in the late 1970s. In the last decade he had many successes including campaigning against local bus cuts and fighting to keep Blantyre Police Station open. Hugh was also Chair of Corporate Resources and more recently again, Chair of the Local Planning Committee.
Other Councillors showed their respect by commenting online. Cllr Mo Razzaq said, ‘Hugh also was the best person I could think of for advice and support and his dry sense of humour was always welcome”
Cllr Maureen Chalmers added, “I was fortunate to meet him more than 30 years ago and work with him over the years. He served Blantyre well, quietly getting things done. He was a gentleman and always kind. “
All our thoughts are with his wife, Margaret and their family and friends at this sad time.
