St Joseph’s Primary Pupils win’s MP’s Short Story Competition

A pupil from St Joesph’s primary school in Blantyre has won Michael Shanks MP’s Short Story competition.

Jaxon Mansfield’s story ‘John the Irn Bru Hero’ was celebrated alongside other entries to the competition at a prize giving at Rutherglen Library last week.

Coinciding with World Book Day, the competition saw P6 and P7 pupils from across the constituency come together to celebrate their creativity.

The competition, which encouraged pupils to use their imagination and writing skills to write a story set in the Rutherglen constituency, received a fantastic response, with over 300 entries from 11 schools.

Michael Shanks MP praised the pupils for their creativity and the high standard of entries, emphasising the crucial role that reading and writing play in children’s development.

Michael Shanks MP said: “It’s been fantastic to see so many young people from across the constituency take part in the competition and showcase their writing skills.

“The standard of entries to the competition was really high this year, but Jaxon’s story about ‘John the Irn-Bru Hero’ really stood out! It’s amazing to see the range of ideas the pupils came up with and to see their imaginations come to life.

“The competition has become one of the highlights of the year. It’s really brilliant to see such enthusiasm for storytelling, and I hope this competition encourages even more young people to explore their passion for reading and writing.

“Congratulations again to Jaxon and the rest of our winners! I can’t wait to see what pupils come up with for next year’s competition.”
