A derelict tenement corner block caught alight earlier today, Friday 15 February 2019 at Springwells, Low Blantyre.
The former Miller’s Fireplaces building was observed to be on fire around 10.15am and the fire brigade was called for. The fire was quickly extinguished before it took any significant hold on the building.
The drama caused some disruption for vehicles and pedestrians for a time whilst Glasgow Road was temporarily closed off in both ways. It had partially re-opened by midday then fully opened again later in the afternoon. The Fire Department have started investigations into its cause and it is our understanding there were no injuries.
The fire again raises a question as to the long term future of this old building, which has suffered badly from subsidence in recent decades.
