Burnbank Flats Fire

A serious fire engulfed flats in Burnbank earlier today Monday 17 June 2019.

As alert was raised, smoke was seen billowing out windows which quickly spread to other parts of the building. As flames grew in one part of the building, council workers managed to get ladders and bravely rescued trapped residents, safely getting them out before the fire brigade arrived.

A spokesperson for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 11.44am on Monday, June 17, to reports of a dwelling fire at George Court in Hamilton.

“Operation Control mobilised four fire appliances to the scene, where crews are currently tackling a fire within a property on the second floor of a four-storey terrace building.”

Several homes within the flats have been considerably damaged.

It is our understanding nobody was injured although this remains to be confirmed from official sources. Efforts of the general public, council and emergency services are to be commended.
