Blantyre pubs, like all others across Scotland had to adjust to a different way of doing things last night.
With a new Nationwide call to close by 10pm, it meant last orders were being sounded as early as 9.15pm in some pubs. There was an eerie quietness to streets last night after 10pm, business clearly affected and some people choosing not to go to the pub at all.
“Last Orders” in these challenging times, isn’t just a call to drink up. It’s a rally call to support local business. The new early closing times doesn’t just affect the profits of local companies, but also of concern hits staff in their pay-packets with reduced hours. It has a knock on effect too for the late night takeways and taxi drivers so dependent on the hospitality trade.
Blantyre’s close community has been brilliant through lockdown and still rallying it would seem. The reasons why early closure is happening is evident and of course safety will always be put first.
However, these are tough times especially for the hospitality trade. We hope sincerely, everybody does their part to continue to support our fantastic local pubs, restaurants, popular takeaways AND hard working taxi companies currently being affected by early closing.
