Around a month ago, news agency ‘Glasgow Live’ in partnership with Amazon asked Scotland’s citizens to nominate their community heroes and we’re pleased to say TWO Blantyre people made a list of 100.
Over 600 nominations were received for people who are going way above and beyond with extraordinary acts of kindness during the health pandemic. Real community heroes.
Blantyre’s Avril Keenan and Mick McCann made a shortlist of 100 people! Speaking of Blantyre’s heroes, amongst the recognised efforts were comments, such as:
“Avril struggled initially herself with not going out. Then she started baking cupcakes for her local community group who distributed round Blantyre. She funded a lot herself with donations of flour etc. Recently set up a just giving page and money flooded in to carry on throughout the year.”
“Mick went above and beyond for the community of Blantyre and surrounding areas. His daily video posted on Facebook always brought a smile as well as information on the queue status in local shops! He organised a collection and then delivery of toiletries etc for patients in Hairmyres Hospital and arranged food collections with local supermarkets to ensure food parcels for the needy. Mick runs a lunch service in the Blantyre Miners Welfare Club where people, especially the pensioners, can eat a homemade meal at a reasonable cost. In the past Mick has organised charity fundraising events to support those in need. Mick is the kind of guy who will help if he can, nothing is too much trouble, and all in his own time for the good of others.”
Well done to Avril and Mick and indeed to all the nominations! Blantyre is exceptionally proud of such amazing community efforts in these extraordinary, strange times. You’ve both made a huge difference and we’re sure people will join us today in saying, ‘thanks’.
