Car Free Zone Starts Today

Two Pilot Car Free Zones commence today, Tuesday 19th April 2022.

The Schemes at St Joseph’s Primary School in Blantyre and Burnside Primary School in Rutherglen are now up and running with signage up and enforcement now in place.

South Lanarkshire Council ask all drivers to be respectful of this zone designed to keep children safer, and not enter without a permit.

A contravention of the zone will result in a £50 fixed penalty notice.

Car free school zones is an initiative where the streets outside a school are closed to traffic at school opening and closing times. Closing the streets to vehicles helps achieve a safer, more pleasant environment for everyone using the streets whilst maintaining access for residents, businesses, pedestrians and cyclists. The initiative is supported by Sustrans and Scottish Government (Cycling, Walking and Safer Routes Scheme).

We’d like to hear from residents and parents. How is this working out for you? Are people following the guidance? What about alternative parking or has the scheme changed how you take your child to school?
