Here’s a touching story this evening, about a very special, brave Blantyre lassie.
Blantyre couple Paula and Gary Stewart were devastated back in April to learn that their precious daughter, Fearne was diagnosed with leukaemia. Fearne is 4 years old and being treated at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. Needless to say she’s had some tough months, which thanks to the support from family, the amazing Hospital staff and of course Fearne’s own efforts, she has bravely dealt with it all.
The family are born and bred in Blantyre and have already received some incredible support from the community here. The most wonderful friends and neighbours and community groups who have surprised Fearne with kindness and support, making her feel very special (as indeed she is!).
Her favourite place in Blantyre is David Livingstone birthplace museum… she calls it “the lion park”. Fearne has been such a superstar, her playful nature and beaming smile, spreading such happiness. She’s a total inspiration as she consistently meets every milestone in her treatment and remains the most positive and happy little lady. She’s well and truly kicking cancer’s behind!
Fearne’s mother Paula told us recently, “‘It’s been the toughest time for everyone, but most of all for Fearne.”
“We’re so proud as she continues to prove to everyone that she’s the bravest and most determined girl, which we already knew, but she still goes on to shock us in how well she’s managing to take on so many challenges and scary moments in such a short space of time.”
“Fearne has also taken such joy from visiting the wonderful playroom on the ward where she’s managed to make friends. This is so important to Fearne and us as a family as she hasn’t been able to attend nursery or meet friends outside of the hospital while she’s immune compromised.”
In recent weeks, Fearne’s nursery at Crossbasket in High Blantyre have been fundraising for charity and Paula wanted to do as much as possible too, deciding to run a 10k tomorrow, Sunday 1st October.
Paula told us, “I’m trying to spread the word as much as possible as a final push for donations”.

Earlier this week, and with thanks to Blantyre Telegraph readers currently subscribed to our Supporters Group, we’ve offered a week’s holiday for Fearne, her brother Joseph and mum and dad (travel and accommodation for the whole family). This is reserved for the future once Fearne is well and for brighter days to look forward to.
Fearne is pictured at various times over the last year. Get well soon Fearne and good luck for tomorrow’s run Paula!
