The results are in and it’s Labour who have won the Rutherglen and Hamilton West By -election.
Well done to Michael Shanks, our new MP on his decisive victory with twice as many votes as the next nearest party. The seat was fiercely fought for and has once again swung back to Labour.
The result now doubles the MPs Labour are sending from Scotland to Westminster from one to two and although by-elections are a snapshot of this community at this particular time, it cal also send out a signal that changes may be taking place elsewhere in Scotland. Only a General Election will determine if thats the case.
Voting numbers in this election weren’t great, with 6 of out 10 people registered to vote, not doing so. Indeed turnout was incredibly low but with first past the post, voters who did post or come out to vote, made a clear choice.
We wish Michael a hearty congratulations and trust he will work as hard as previous MPs in that position for the good of the community as a whole.
