New Community Cabinet Unveiled

In the midst of Storm Babet yesterday, Blantyre men Jimmy Small and Paul Veverka quietly unveiled the brand new community display board at High Blantyre Cemetery.

At 4.30pm on Friday 20th October, the new cabinet costing nearly £2,000 features the story of Blantyre Pit Disaster was made available to the public, the culmination of many weeks of work and fundraising. All in time, just ahead of the Anniversary tomorrow!

The cabinet was erected with kind assistance from South Lanarkshire Council on Friday morning and involved creating a viewing area near the War Memorial, at the entrance to the oldest part of the Cemetery.

Thank you to everybody who donated, including Jimmy, Paul, Blantyre Telegraph Supporters Group, Simm Endeavour Fund and numerous other individuals through public subscription during 2023. All funds were managed by the Miners Welfare.

A long lasting, permanent public display telling the sad but respectful story of the Blantyre Pit Disaster is now available to all. Other plans for the area including finishing off the area around the cabinet with a more suitable surface and installing a Cemetery Map in due course.
