Calder Mess near the Falls

A warning to swimmers or anybody walking pets at the Calder that there’s a foul mess near the Milheugh Falls.

This usually beautiful spot at the Calder on the Rotten Calder River is severely polluted with dog fouling, spilling into and at the edge of the river, just upstream of the Falls. From messages sent into Telegraph, we’ve pieced together what happened.

Around a fortnight ago, during warm weather, somebody dragged a wheelie bin down to ‘Snake Island’ at the riverside. We posted at that time about the bin in our supporters group. Over the next fortnight, dog walkers may have thought this was a public bin, and innocently put their bags of dog poo into it.

However, at the end of last week, it’s been deliberately pushed into the water, the bin submerging and the disgusting contents spilling over the river and riverbank in a foul mess. This was the scene at the end of last week at one of local residents favourite spots. We can do better than this, folks.

With warm, sunny weather continuing, tonight we’d like to point out this environmental hazard to anybody thinking of swimming at the falls, creating some awareness of what is slightly upstream. We know wild swimmers and kids, as well as dogs have been seen in the water last weekend since.

We’re unaware if this has been cleaned since or washed away. Not pleasant in the slightest.
