Blantyre Outdoor Market?

Enquiries are once again taking place into the formation of a new “Blantyre Outdoor Market”.

An idea touted in 2022, never came to be due to lingering covid restrictions at the time, then various arising obstructions, including primarily finding a suitable site and necessary, dedicated people to form a committee to manage and run it.

We exclusively revealed that a market was being thought about a few years ago but now, to help with progressing the idea, seek to gauge readers viewpoints and interest here in the comments below. Is there an appetite for a market in Blantyre?

There’s much to organise behind this proposal including necessary permission from South Lanarkshire Council. A proposed licence for a Blantyre based summer food and crafts market would be required and only if there was suitable interest from market vendors. The plans suggest holding an outdoor licensed market in Blantyre between April and September, twice a month, likely on a Saturday morning or afternoon. However, it is still far from being a certainty.

Many other logistics still have to be approached including whether it should be a private endeavour or non profit. Other important decisions agreeing the venue, compliance, insuring the event and of course attracting interested traders are in early stages. Enquiries about trading will not be replied to until official announcements are made nearer the time.

Would YOU be interested in being on the Market committee? Would you be interested in taking a stall or selling there? Or maybe just shopping there? It will all come down to willingness in the community. Have your say. Would YOU welcome the return of a regular market in Blantyre? Please share.
