Tonight we’re posting a most heartwarming, touching story about local man Daniel Dixon.
Some readers may remember way back in September 2020, during the height of the Covid pandemic, local 17 year old lad Daniel Dixon was knocked off his bike, unfortunately sustaining major life threatening injuries. It was an accident which would change his life.
Daniel has been immensely brave, patient and it’s safe to say, he’s had a tremendous fight in the time since. He’s gone through numerous operations and was extremely unwell on several occasions.
In November 2023, after 3 long years, he finally left Hairmyres Hospital. The caring staff, moved by Daniel’s story and getting to know him and his family well, marked his departure by forming a beautiful, moving guard of honour. Clapping as Daniel made his way out the corridors, it was clear he had touched at lot of hearts in his time in hospital. The NHS Professionals who cared for him have to be commended, especially Hairmyres HDU (Ward 1).
His story of recovery then moved on to the next chapter when he moved into a brand new rehab unit (The Briar Unit) in Stonehouse. This state of the art rehab unit is for brain injuries and it goes without saying, he received the very best of care. It was an incredible opportunity for him and his family.
But of course, Daniel, being a young man of 21 years, took his next steps towards more independence and a big step in that process was to finally move into his own home.
So, last Thursday, Daniel’s parents took him home to his own flat in Hamilton! Four years on after his life changed, he was finally home!
Debbie, Daniel’s mother told Blantyre Telegraph, “We were told this wouldn’t happen, he’d have to be placed into a care facility. As his mum I knew this wouldn’t be an option, as (then) a 17 year old boy – a care home for the elderly? No! I dug my wee size 3 heels in and fought harder than I’ve ever had to.”
“I was told the new disabled friendly flats at the old Phillips site in Hamilton wouldn’t be suitable due to the bathrooms not being big enough for his (extensive) needs. I took it upon myself and contacted the builders – my mammy always said quiet weans don’t get cake! I was contacted within days from David Carmichael, Development Director North from Lovell homes. This is the man who made this happen! “
Debbie continued, “Daniel’s flat has been adapted specially for him with all due credit to Lovell Homes. David is owed a pint or 5 from us. His brand new flat is a 5 minute drive from us, from his gran and his auntie.”
The family have received so much support from friends, organisations and individuals, including Calum the social worker within UHH. Monica Lennon MSP also greatly supported the family as did other family members and friends emotionally and helping with visits over the last 4 years. Debbie also wants to thank Lovell Homes and care providers Enable Scotland. He has a team of 7 amazing carers who are equally as excited to help Daniel in his new chapter. Not forgetting the community in Blantyre for the prayers, candles and well wishes.
As for Daniel? He’s settled in well and we’re told is very content. He smiled and laughed when he got to his new home and we know the family are immensely happy at this outcome.
This inspiring young man has been through so much, as has all the Dixon family. We’re sure you will join us in sharing this article and wishing them all the very best for the future.
