Support for Small Business Saturday

Michael Shanks MP recently demonstrated his support for a UK-wide campaign by visiting several small businesses in the Rutherglen constituency.

The Labour MP was promoting Small Business Saturday, an initiative that encourages customers to support independent businesses in their communities and motivates business owners to showcase their services. The campaign, backed by American Express, typically takes place on the first Saturday of December each year.

During his visit, Michael Shanks stopped by Pandora’s card and gift shop in Cambuslang, which is selling Cambuslang Community Council mugs for charity; Mo’s Premier Shop in Blantyre; and Tortolano’s in Main Street, Uddingston, known for its handmade ice cream and traditional sweets.

Shanks commented: “Small Business Saturday is about celebrating local small businesses and encouraging people to shop on our main streets. Small businesses are the backbone of the economy and have endured challenging times with Covid and the cost of living crisis.”

“I enjoyed visiting local shops, cafes, and ice cream parlours to learn more about the issues businesses in our community are facing, as well as to celebrate the excellent products and services available right on our doorstep.”
