Well known Blantyre man, Jim Whelan has written a book.
The book “From Penury to Solatium” by J. J. Whelan follows the life of a man growing up in a working-class family in the small former mining village of Blantyre. Dealing with a challenging upbringing and seeking a better life through hard work and various experiences, Jimmy’s life journey includes struggles with family life, substance abuse, and the rough realities of the working class, particularly in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
We were privileged to have access to an early draft, reading through from cover to cover what was certainly a captivating and interesting read.
Jimmy’s story chronicles his transformation from a boy caught in the cycle of poverty and poor choices to a man striving for more, eventually moving to London in search of opportunity. He works various jobs in the construction industry, navigating legal and illegal ventures, all while surrounded by colorful and sometimes dangerous characters.
