Towers in Gorbals being Demolished

The last 2 of the old tower blocks in Gorbals are being torn down tomorrow, Sunday 29th June.

Built in 1965 to replace cleared Victorian slums, the buildings have been a well known feature in Glasgow for 60 years. No time has been provided by contractors but it is thought the demolition will happen in the afternoon, with a large excursion zone already in place.

Once the site is cleared, the New Gorbals Housing Association will build a new social housing estate, with around 150 flats to rehouse families.

A spokesperson for The New Gorbals Housing Association said: “The Caledonia Road tower blocks are currently being stripped and prepared for demolition. The blocks will be blown down by controlled use of explosives in the Summer of 2025 – we can’t be more specific at this time. Full site completion date is expected to be early 2026.”
