Gas Leak causes evacuation

Blantyre Leisure centre and nearby David Dale House on John Street, Blantyre have been evacuated this afternoon as a precaution following a significant gas leak.

South Lanarkshire Council had closed off the road earlier today in unconnected works from 38 John Street up to Glasgow Road, a full road closure for resurfacing works this week. The leak coincides with his work commencing.

One council staff member told Blantyre Telegraph, “The guys that are relaying the road have scalped off the head of the gas main. We were all sent home from the office (LVJB and the Council) and the sports centre evacuated.”

Nobody can currently park in the upper part of John Street due to the fencing for the road closure. The reinstatement works to the surfacing had been due to end on Wednesday.
