UK Travellers: Europe Border Checks Explained

From Sunday 12th October 2025, anyone travelling from the UK to the Schengen zone will face new border checks under the EU Entry/Exit System (EES).

What’s changing:

  • Passport stamps are being replaced by a new digital system.
  • On your first trip, you’ll need to give fingerprints and a facial photo at the border.
  • Children under 12 won’t need fingerprints but will have a photo taken.
  • EES covers short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • The system will be introduced in phases, with full rollout expected by April 2026.

What it means for UK travellers:

  • Expect longer waits at borders on your first visit.
  • Future crossings will be faster once your details are stored.
  • The system will automatically track entries and exits to prevent overstays.
  • Those with EU residence permits or long-stay visas are generally exempt.

✈️ Travel tips:
✅ Bring a biometric passport
✅ Allow extra time for border checks
✅ Be ready for fingerprint and photo scans
✅ Have proof of your trip and return plans
