Some world news next! The world-famous Louvre Museum in Paris has been dramatically closed this morning following a daring heist inside its historic Apollo Gallery. According to France’s Interior Ministry, several individuals broke in using a mechanised liftbefore stealing a collection of jewels described as being of “incalculable” value.
Armed with small chainsaws, the thieves reportedly smashed their way through display cases before fleeing the scene on a scooter just after 8.30am this morning, Sunday 19th October. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the theft, while Culture Minister Rachida Dati said no injuries were reported but that a major investigation is now under way.
Police have cordoned off the museum and forensic teams are combing the gallery where some of France’s most treasured artefacts are displayed. The incident has sent shockwaves through the art world, recalling infamous thefts from the same museum’s past — including the Mona Lisa’s disappearance in 1911.
