A massive game tonight for Scotland’s International team. Scotland can reach first men’s World Cup since 1998 with at least a draw against Greece and victory over Denmark.
Scotland and Denmark are both currently on 10 points in qualifying Group C. The Danes have a handsome goal difference advantage of six goals and that is the first deciding factor if teams are level on points – not head-to-head.
However, Scotland will be hoping they can get the job done without the need for such messiness.
Maybe we can assume Denmark will beat Belarus at home – having thrashed them 6-0 last month – which would move them to 13 points. But they might not.
If Scotland beat an already-eliminated Greece in Athens, they would match that tally, setting up a high-anxiety decider at Hampden. A draw in that one on Tuesday would almost certainly favour the Danes, given the goal difference disparity.
Should the Scots draw in Athens tonight, victory over Denmark would still be enough to top the group.
However, defeat for Scotland in Greece, coupled with a Denmark win over Belarus, would mean an extraordinary margin of victory is required in that final game to give Clarke’s side any chance of automatic qualification.
Can we do it? Who knows? Kick off is 7.45pm. Watch the Game on BBC2.
