A Hamilton-based youth charity is set to expand its life-changing work across Lanarkshire, and is calling on the local community to step forward and help make it happen.
Community Volunteers Enabling You (COVEY) has been confirmed as a delivery partner in Phase 7 of CashBack for Communities – a national initiative that reinvests money seized from criminal activity into communities.
The latest phase will see up to £26 million invested between April 2026 and March 2029, supporting young people aged 10 to 25 who may be at risk of antisocial behaviour or involvement in crime.
Since launching in 2008, the programme has already invested £156 million and supported more than 1.4 million young people across Scotland – providing safe spaces, skills development and positive opportunities that help prevent harm before it occurs.
As one of 51 organisations awarded funding, COVEY will deliver its new CashBack Connections project across North and South Lanarkshire, focusing on young people aged 10 to 16 who are at risk of offending or reoffending.
The project will offer one-to-one mentoring and group activities, helping young people build confidence, develop new skills and form trusted relationships – while also having fun and feeling part of their community.
However, the success of the project will depend heavily on local volunteers.
COVEY is now urgently appealing for people across Lanarkshire to get involved as volunteer mentors, befrienders and drivers, roles that are central to delivering consistent, relationship-based support for young people.
Volunteers are asked to give just a few hours each week, supporting young people through activities such as outings, games and informal mentoring. Full training and ongoing support are provided, ensuring volunteers feel confident and equipped in their role.
Opportunities are available across communities including Hamilton, East Kilbride, Airdrie and beyond, with flexible roles designed to fit around people’s availability.
Lee Johnstone, COVEY’s Chief Executive Officer, said the involvement of volunteers is vital to the charity’s work:
“We are absolutely delighted to be part of the CashBack for Communities partnership. This funding allows us to reach more young people at a crucial time in their lives, offering support and positive opportunities that can truly change futures. The success of this project relies on the strength of our local community. Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at COVEY, and we’re looking for more people to step forward and help us deliver this vital work. By giving just a small amount of time, volunteers can make a lasting difference to a young person’s life.”
Volunteering not only helps young people thrive, but also offers individuals the chance to build skills, gain experience and make a lasting difference in their community.
With increased funding now in place, COVEY hopes more people than ever will step forward to support the young people in their local communities, helping turn the proceeds of crime into positive futures for young people across Lanarkshire.
