As you’ll have seen on the news today, humans are back at the moon! The astronauts aboard Artemis II are making history as they journey deeper into space than any human has ever travelled.
Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen have now passed the distance record set during the Apollo era — travelling farther from Earth than any crew before them as their Orion spacecraft sweeps around the far side of the Moon.
This dramatic lunar flypast tonight marks the first time astronauts have ventured this far beyond Earth orbit in more than 50 years. While circling the Moon, the crew are capturing imagery of the rarely seen far side, testing spacecraft systems in deep space conditions and helping prepare the way for future human landings later this decade.
At their most distant point from Earth earlier this evening, the crew were thousands of miles farther away than any previous astronauts in history — a powerful milestone in humanity’s return to deep-space exploration.
🌍 Humanity is once again pushing the boundaries of how far we can travel.
