Sad news from Scotland’s retail industry following the death of Blantyre-born Charlie Faulkiner, a highly respected figure whose career in retail and wholesale spanned several decades.
Charlie’s remarkable career had its beginnings right here in Blantyre, where he started working in his local Co-op store. From those local roots, he went on to build an impressive career within the Co-operative movement, holding a number of senior positions and eventually becoming chief executive of its wholesale operations.
His career took him to the Titwood Road Dairy, then headquarters for the wholesaler operations, before he later became chief executive at the organisation’s head office in Morrison Street, a position he held for many years.
After leaving the Co-op, Charlie joined Wismen, becoming second in charge of its retail sector operations before retiring around 10 years ago.
Despite his success at the highest levels of Scottish retail, Charlie retained strong connections with the local area. He lived in Hamilton and was a past member of Blantyre Round Table, as well as an active supporter of Maggie’s charity.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eleanor, his son Scott and granddaughter Emilia.
Pete Cheema, chief executive of the Scottish Grocers’ Federation, paid tribute to Charlie’s “integrity, kindness” and support for others throughout the industry, adding that his contribution was “immense” and his legacy would long be remembered.
From starting out in a Blantyre Co-op to becoming one of the most respected figures in Scotland’s retail and wholesale industry, Charlie’s was certainly an impressive local success story.
