Blantyre Oscars winner seriously injured in holiday accident in Greece

We’re sending our heartfelt best wishes to Denby McLaren from Larkhall, who many Blantyre Telegraph readers may remember as the deserving winner of our Heroism and Kindness Award at the Blantyre Oscars in 2019.

Denby has been seriously injured after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony whilst celebrating her 30th birthday in Greece with her mum. What should have been a wonderful milestone birthday has turned into a devastating ordeal for Denby and her family.

She suffered a broken vertebra, multiple broken bones in her foot and other injuries, leaving her hospitalised in Greece and facing a lengthy recovery.

Her family have now launched an urgent fundraising appeal to bring her safely home to Scotland, where she can receive further treatment surrounded by loved ones.

In their emotional appeal, the family said:

“No family should ever have to experience something like this, and never in a million years did we imagine we would find ourselves in this position.”

They added:

“It is impossible to put into words the fear, heartbreak and uncertainty that Denby and our family are experiencing right now. In a matter of moments, everything changed, and we are now facing a situation none of us could ever have prepared for. Our biggest wish is simple: we just want to bring Denby home.”

Denby requires specialist medical repatriation by air ambulance, travelling on a stretcher with medical assistance throughout the journey. The costs involved are considerable, adding financial pressure to an already distressing situation.

The fundraising appeal has already attracted tremendous generosity, with more than £28,000 raised at the time of the original report.

Her family said:

“Any donation, no matter how big or small, would mean more to us than we could ever explain. Every single contribution will help us get one step closer to having Denby safely back with her family, where she belongs.”

❤️ Having recognised Denby’s kindness and heroism back in 2019, we’re especially saddened to hear this news. We’re thinking of Denby, her mum and all her family at this incredibly difficult time and sincerely hope she can return home safely and make a full recovery.
