Upsetting World news. At least 68 people have lost their lives and dozens more have been injured following a catastrophic collision between two trains in central Spain, in one of Europe’s deadliest rail disasters in modern times.
The tragedy unfolded shortly after 9am on Wednesday, around 100 miles south of Madrid, when a high-speed train carrying 397 passengers crashed into the rear of another train which had stopped on the tracks. The impact was so severe that several carriages plunged down an embankment, while one caught fire.
Survivors have described terrifying scenes, with passengers thrown from their seats, others trapped beneath wreckage and desperate attempts to smash windows to escape. Images from the scene show extensive destruction, including a section of railway track which pierced one of the carriages.
Spain’s Transport Minister, Óscar Puente, said the stationary train, carrying 147 passengers, had initially stopped because of a computer failure. A subsequent decision by a Madrid control centre to allow trains to move without speed restrictions has been identified as a contributing factor, with serious questions now being raised about how the disaster was allowed to happen.
The collision is Spain’s deadliest railway disaster in 13 years. Emergency services have been dealing with the aftermath of an incident that has shocked the country and left families facing unimaginable loss.
❤️ Our thoughts are with everyone who has lost loved ones, those injured and the emergency crews responding to this terrible tragedy.
