Avenues Programme “green light”
Glasgow City Council have confirmed they’ll spend £115m on the transformation of the City Centre, creating wider, scenic tree lined ‘Avenues’ in attempts to make the city more beautiful for the future.
Seven main throughfares are included in the “Avenues” programme, including Trongate and Sauchiehall Street which in recent years have seen some neglect.
The programme aims to make the city more people friendly, more suited to local business and following parking considerations, plans look likey to reduce the amount of cars from city centre locations.
Work will take place over the next 8 years creating continuous pedestrian and cycle route throughout Glasgow. Pavements will be wider, intelligent street lighting introduced and free Wi-Fi introduced throughout all public spaces in the programme. Trees will also be introduced in efforts to make Glasgow City Centres retail spaces more attractive.
