Labour appoint new Veterans Champion

12669698_990907470976698_4556493642758877490_nCouncillor Bert Thomson has been appointed as South Lanarkshire Labour’s Veterans Champion, tasked with promoting the interests of veterans and raising awareness of veterans’ issues on behalf of the Labour Group at the Council.

Under Labour leadership, South Lanarkshire Council first appointed an official Veterans Champion, the late Jim Handibode, and the position has continued under the SNP Administration. Now Labour have become the first opposition group on the Council to appoint their own champion for veterans.

Councillor Bert Thomson said: “I am delighted with this appointment and I look forward to working with statutory bodies, voluntary organisations and other councillors to ensure there is better awareness of the issues faced by veterans and their families.

“I have already had some fascinating discussions with veterans about issues like housing and I have heard first-hand about the daily challenges many veterans face. I hope that in speaking up for South Lanarkshire’s veterans, both in the Labour Party and in the wider community, that I can help bring about some of the changes that can improve their lives.”
