Our six month fundraiser for a fantastic new Playpark at the Village ended yesterday with a whopping sum raised!
Since May, we’ve been raising money on our Just Giving page to help buy equipment for a new Playpark at the Livingstone Birthplace. The total is now in and we’re delighted to announce Blantyre residents and businesses have raised an incredible £2,584.00 !!
We’ve been in contact with David Livingstone Trust last week and made arrangements for it to be transferred to their ongoing, larger fundraiser.
The renovation of the museum and pavilions is well underway and there are plans to remove the old, outdated playpark. A super, new exciting playpark is planned costing £115,000. The grants given to the museum by the National Lottery only covered work to the museum and not the park, so it fell upon the community to try to raise the playpark funds.
The Trust is a registered charity so relies wholly on such donations. Knowing that around half the sum is now generously raised for the new park, it now opens up opportunities for them to apply for grants to get the remainder of the funding. That’s still the hard part to come. The community showing a willingness for the project however, has hugely helped.
We’ll be in a position to report here by mid December if the rest of the funding has been secured. All being well, Blantyre should have the most Imaginative new Play Park, themed around Livingstone’s African expeditions, fit for today’s children and generations to come.
This is something really special with Blantyre urgently needing better parks. With thanks to everybody who donated and making this happen!
