Calum’s Plea for Road Safety

Next, a plea from the son of a Blantyre reader, for people to take care when driving and parking beside a local school.

Calum (9) is a junior road safety officer at Auchinraith Primary School and like other pupils, has noticed that cars often can be hazards around drop off and pick up times. Unlike St Josephs school which now has car free zones, his school at the junction of Calder Street and Victoria Street is in a busy area on two major Blantyre roads.

The Head teacher and other staff of course do patrol the area but some drivers have been inconsiderate by parking on the footpaths. Calum and his wee team has been asked to come up with ideas that could help make folk realise the dangers of parking on paths and to help people see oncoming traffic at the corners. He puts out this plea for drivers to be mindful of others around the school, to slow down and be careful at designated drop off areas.

Kids should not be put at risk at any time by cars mounting the paths even for just a short time.

Calum hopes this message can be shared so that people can be more aware of the dangers of selfish parking. We hope all our readers are mindful of this near Auchinraith and indeed other schools and wish Calum and his team the very best of luck with his very worthwhile school project.
