Speaking for Calderside Academy

Pupils from Calderside Academy recently took part in a prestigious public speaking competition.

On Thursday, 19th May 2022, the school had been asked to send S3 pupils to the Lord Lieutenant’s Public Speaking competition, which took place in Motherwell Concert Hall. Lady Haughey invited schools from across Lanarkshire to take part.

There were pupils representing four schools, Calderside Academy, Clyde Valley High, Cumbernauld Academy and Hamilton Grammar. Calderside Academy were represented by Anna Smit, Zara Prentice, Owen Gallagher, Joshua Irwin, Shaw McMahon and Lana Munchie.

The pupils had worked diligently for weeks on their speeches and thoroughly enjoyed the whole process. They finished a close second and were rewarded with book tokens as prizes. The school was also given £250 to spend on books for the English Dept.

Their teachers, Mr Wilkie and Mr McSwegan, were delighted with all of their hard work and how well they represented the school. A special thank you needs to go to Mr Sandy Wilkie, who gave up his time to mentor the speakers and help them with their preparations.
