Big Help Out

Asda Blantyre colleagues have joined forces to host a litter pick around Springwells in Blantyre.

The litter pick was organised as part of Asda’s involvement in ‘The Big Help Out’ to mark the King’s Coronation, where thousands of organisations across the country are coming together to help out in the local community.

To further support the ‘Big Help Out’, Asda colleagues across the UK were offered a paid day off to take part in the Great Community Clean Up, bringing communities together to make a difference in their area by arranging litter picks in places such as parks, community centres, beaches and canals.

With help from Bonnie Blantyre, Friends of the Calder and Blantyre Community Council, Community Champion at Asda Blantyre, Mary Sutherland alongside Gillian Summers from Asda Hamilton picked up 18 bags of rubbish as well as four dining chairs, two TVs, a bike and motorway sign that had been dumped.

Mary Sutherland, Community Champion at Asda Blantyre, said:

“The litter pick was a true community effort, and it was amazing to see the amount of people who got involved including the three organisations who came together to give us a hand.

“It was so well received that we decided to organise another one in local school, High Blantyre P.S. and the pupils loved it! We hope to host lots more litter picks in the future.”

Gillian Summers, Community Champion at Asda Hamilton, added:

“It was great to see so many people get involved in the litter pick and we all worked so well as a team collecting as much rubbish as we could.

“I am grateful to be able to make a difference in the Blantyre community and it has inspired us to carry out more litter picks in the near future.”

Details of the ‘Big Help Out’ events, as well as other local volunteering opportunities, will be advertised on community boards in Asda stores and customers can also download the ‘Big Help Out’ app to find out more.
