Helen’s Coronation Celebrations

It’s Coronation day, Saturday 6th May 2023! For many people up and down the country, this will be a day of celebration with several events taking place in Blantyre.

Local people such as Helen Roberts (pictured) are decorating their homes getting ready to watch the event on TV. Helen Roberts (Gallacher), formerly of Maxwell Crescent is now 91 and as she and her daughter put up their coronation decorations this week, Helen told her family about the first Coronation held in her lifetime in 1937.

Helen attended Auchinraith School at the time and all the children were given a shiny, new brass threepenny bit which had just been put in circulation for the first time and were dated 1937. She also received a beautiful commemorative leather bound bible in a leather sleeve from Sunday school. She remembers a party at school and the following year the school children lined the street to watch the king and queen drive past.

Today’s Coronation of King Charles III is the 3rd in her lifetime and she has lived during the reign of 5 monarchs – quite an achievement for a Blantyre lass!

Whatever you’re doing today, whether you’re celebrating (or not), have a great day.
